Abdur Rehman biography

As a relative latecomer to the International front, Abdur Rehman debuted at 26 as a spin replacement for Shahid Afridi, welcoming the touring West Indies in December, 2006. Featuring in three of four ODIs, Rehman built on an impressive start, consistently notching wickets in each match while maintaining a prudent economy rate. A second opportunity soon followed suite, but was short-lived for a mere two ODI and three T20 overs away at South Africa in 2007.

Looking to exploit roughs perhaps never made him the biggest turner of a red cherry. On surfaces which have no roughs to exploit, containment took precedence over wickets. He did continue to do well in pitches at home, evidenced during South Africa’s return tour to Pakistan the same year. The same series also marked his Test debut, where he notched a bittersweet 8/210.

In a nation that thrives at budding youngsters into international environs as soon as possible, being around the fringes of selection is perhaps as good as it can get for an autumn chicken.

Fast Facts

With figures of 4/105 in both the first and second innings of Test debut, Abdur Rehman became only the third Pakistani player whose debut figures for both innings topped his team’s best bowling figures.

On his ODI debut picked up 2-20 off 10 overs against the West Indies.
